ECZEMA
(Alternative name: Dermatitis)
*The term eczema is derived from a Greek ward that means “ to boil out or over. ”
*It is a convenient “wastebasket” for many undiagnosed rashes.
*Definition:
Dermatitis may be defined as epidermal eruptions characterized clinically by vesicles, juicy papules or lichenification and hitologically by varying degree of intercellular edema (spongiosis).
  ITCHING  IS  THE  PROMINENT
  COMPONENT OF DERMATITIS.
If it does not itch, reconsider                                   the diagnosis of dermatitis.
TYPES  OF  DERMATITIS
(based on clinical and histological feature)
p1. Acute (vesicles).
nAcute dermatitis has a marked amount of spongiosis causing vesiculation.
p2. Subacute (juicy papules).
nSubacute dermatitis has a less amount spongiosis resulting in “juicy papule.”
p3. Chronic (lichenification ).
nChronic dermatitis has only slight spongiosis with  markedly  thickened epidermis (licanification).

ACUTE ECZEMA. Vesicles that weep and may become confluent and bullous dominate the clinical picture, as in this patient with an acute pompholyx.

SUBACUTE ECZEMA.
Oozing has stopped but oedema persists.

CHRONIC ECZEMA.
Dry, hyperkeratic and lichenified skin.
